Using those published figures, the combined download requirement is:

15 + 15 + 25 = 55 Mbps.

Adding an illustrative 30% allowance for other traffic gives about 72 Mbps. That percentage is a planning assumption, not an industry standard. A connection consistently delivering 100 Mbps at the devices would provide more room than the calculated load, although latency and stability still need checking.

What is a good upload speed?

Upload speed determines how quickly you send files, camera video and other data out to the internet. Look at it separately from the headline download figure when comparing plans.

Is 100 Mbps fast enough, or do you need gigabit?

For a small household, 100 Mbps can be sufficient when the combined workload fits comfortably within the speed delivered to its devices. Put the upgrade into minutes. At a sustained 100 Mbps, a 50 GB download would take approximately 66 minutes 40 seconds under ideal conditions. At 1,000 Mbps, it would take 6 minutes 40 seconds. These calculated times assume the file server and equipment can sustain the rate; actual downloads can take longer.

Would saving that time matter every week, or only occasionally? That is a more useful purchasing question than whether a larger number looks better.

Why fast internet can still feel slow

Download speed measures throughput. Other measurements help explain how responsive a connection feels:

  • Ping: the round-trip delay to a particular server, measured in milliseconds.
  • Jitter: variation in that delay.
  • Loaded latency: the delay while the connection is carrying other traffic.
